Perceptions and Applications of Information Literacy by First Year Applied Science Students

Abstract: This paper examines where students prefer to find information, and then matches survey results with students' assignments. Surveys showed that half the surveyed students used library databases (e.g. ProQuest) as their first preference to locate scientific information; however, of these students, one third did not have any journal articles cited in their assignment. Furthermore, of those students with no journal articles cited in their reference list, 65% claimed to feel comfortable using library databases, aga… Show more

“…In recent years, the findings derived from various IL assessment studies across the world were somewhat unsatisfactory. Students appear to have strong reliance on Internet search engines for acquiring information, and IL is still an area to be worked on even among digital natives (Johnston, 2010;Koltay, et al, 2010;Ladbrook and Prober, 2011;Salisbury and Karasmanis, 2011;Wilkes and Gurney, 2009). Many researchers have found that not all students have the skills and knowledge to make effective use of information (Bennett, et al, 2008;Cunningham, 2010;Hargittai, 2010;Rowlands et al, 2008).…”

“…These results indicate that students are actually know that certain tasks require independent information seeking. Previous studies that examined the perception of information literacy in students also showed that first-year students were aware of the differences between information seeking efforts at secondary schools and college level (Wilkes & Gurney, 2009). If at high school students have been accustomed to assignments that demand information search, the college years will be faced with better readiness.…”
