BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between muscular performance consisting of a single repetition on the chair squat exercise (CSQ) and different measures of functional capacity, balance, quality of life and cognitive status in older adults.MethodsA total of 40 participants (22 women, 18 men; age = 72.2 ± 4.9 years) joined the investigation. Muscular performance was assessed by measuring movement velocity in the CSQ with no external load using a validated smartphone application (PowerLift for iOS). Functional capacity, balance, quality of life and cognitive status were evaluated using the hand-grip strength (HGS) test, the Berg-scale, the EuroQol 5D (EQ-5D) and the Mini mental state examination questionnaire (MMSE). Finally, participants were divided into two subgroups (N = 20) according to their velocity in the CSQ exercise.ResultsPositive correlations were obtained between movement velocity in the CSQ and HGS (r = 0.76, p < 0.001), the Berg-scale (r = 0.65, p < 0.001), the EQ-5D (r = 0.34, p = 0.03) and the MMSE (r = 0.36, p = 0.02). Participants in the fastest subgroup showed very likely higher scores in the Berg-scale (ES = 1.15) and the HGS (ES = 1.79), as well as likely higher scores in the MMSE scale (ES = 0.69).DiscussionThese results could have potential clinical relevance as they support the use of a time-efficient, non-fatiguing test of muscular performance (i.e., the CSQ) to evaluate functional capacity and mental cognition in older adults.

Objectives: The EQ-5D-3L and EQ-5D-5L instruments have been used in studies of patient and demographic groups in Colombia, but to date there are no 5L population norms. This study aimed to produce a set of EQ-5D-5L population norms for Colombia and to see what insights into health inequality in Colombia can be discerned from these norms. Methods:The EQ-5D-5L self-reported health questionnaire was included in a survey of a representative sample of 3400 adults aged 18 to 64 in Colombia. EQ-5D-5L states, mean EQ VAS, and index values were obtained by sex, age, education, income group, ethnicity, residence, employment status, health insurance status, and household size. EQ-5D-5L index values from Uruguay were used. Regression models were used to investigate inequality. Results:The mean EQ VAS value was 85.3, the mean index value was 0.953, and 52.2% of the sample reported being in state 11111. Self-reported health was higher for men, declined in higher age groups, and was lower for lower-income and education groups. The EQ-5D-5L instrument was observed to be more sensitive than the EQ-5D-3L instrument in Colombia. The dimensions with the highest prevalence of reported problems were anxiety/depression and pain/discomfort. The main drivers of inequality were age, sex, income, and education. Conclusions:The population norms developed in this study can be used as baseline values for future studies of patient or treatment groups, and for investigations into the health of specific demographic groups.

Introducción: la evaluación de la Calidad de Vida Relacionada con la Salud (CVRS) y el estado funcional de pacientes con Ataque Cerebrovascular (ACV), podría complementar la práctica clínica. Objetivo: evaluar la CVRS, aplicando EuroQol-5-dimensiones (EQ-5D) en pacientes colombianos con ACV y correlacionar sus resultados con la escala de Rankin Modificada (mRS). Métodos: estudio de corte transversal analítico anidado a una cohorte de pacientes con ACV isquémico en Colombia con mediana de 3 meses de seguimiento (Q1: 1- Q3:3) post-ictus. Correlacionamos los dominios del EQ-5D, índice EQ-5D y mRS con la puntuación de EQ-5D VAS. Generamos un modelo de regresión lineal simple para evaluar la variabilidad usando r2. Resultados: un total de 91 pacientes con una edad media 71,2 años; 59,3 % hombres. Se encontró correlación inversa entre los dominios EQ-5D, mayor para movilidad (rs = -0,69) y menor para dolor/malestar (rs -0,52, p < 0,001). El r2 osciló entre 0,25 (dolor/malestar) y 0,47 (índice EQ-5D). Los pacientes con mRS ≥ 3 redujeron significativamente su puntuación EQ-5D VAS en 25,64 puntos (IC 95%: -33,04; -18,24). La variabilidad en las puntuaciones EQ-5D VAS se produjo por el índice EQ-5D (47 %) y por mRS (34 %). Conclusiones: la correlación entre EQ-5D y mRS fue favorable. Aunque EQ-5D y mRS evalúan diferentes esferas en los pacientes con ACV, la aplicación del EQ-5D en podría aportar información multidimensional sobre cómo se afecta la vida después de un ictus, así como orientar estrategias de rehabilitación en esferas como depresión, autocuidado, ansiedad y dolor; especialmente relevante para pacientes con discapacidades (mRS ≥ 3).
