Perception and Illusion in Interior Design

Abstract: Beside physical methods to modify the limits of interior space, there are also some design decisions and tricks that can change the perception of a visual space. Therefore, it's possible to correct interior without redesigning or destructions -breaking old walls and making new ones, for example, with the help of optical illusions that change visual perception of interior space. A room can be visually enlarged, deepened, broadened, heightened, narrowed, or lowered. Things like color, lighting, interior elements… Show more

“…More than half of the responses to the applied design elements placed between 'somewhat likely' and 'most likely,' indicated overall approval of the hospital room design by the adolescent patients. This study anticipated significant associations of roomy or controllable perceptions with trim styles or design details since visual effects of interior elements on interior spatial perceptions were substantial in the research (Jaglarz, 2011). The impact of interior settings, such as shapes and arrangement of interior features, should influence the interior space perceptions through visual illusions.…”

“…We must talk about the hotel's distinctive andunique location, which, in itself, is anoptical formation different from the rest of the hotels in the world where this hotel is designed on slope on the Gulf of Salerno, this hotel wasand still retains its style where we find the original forms as in figures ( 10), (11) and (12) that the external design and the covering of the facade mix with the surrounding nature also retaining its historical identity, as we note that the facade walls do not contain any additions or colors, but rather retain simplicity adhering to its historical style, and we desire to people to visitit because of the comfort for the soul by meditating with this beauty. We find that all these formations are simple and harmonious aim to attract visitors where we find itbrought out the tourist identity of the building with maintaining its historical identity.…”

“…Since people's recognition of space and geometry changes depending on the optical illusion, applying the optical illusion to space affects people's perceptions (Danckert, Sharif, Haffenden, Schiff, & Goodale, 2002;Haffenden & Goodale, 1998). The optical illusion in interior design includes such principles as light illusion, illusion through mirrors, color illusion, illusion through the color of light, and decorative illusion (Jaglarz, 2011). The illusion principles that can be applied to 3D virtual space include line illusion, distance illusion, and geometric illusion.…”
