Perception and attitudes of dentists regarding the complications of conventional acrylic dentures and overdentures supported by teeth or implants

Abstract: This study aimed to assess the perception of dentists on the complications associated with prosthodontic treatments with acrylic dentures and overdentures in partially or complete edentulous patients. The study analyzed the complications of acrylic dentures and overdentures using a questionnaire with 24 open or closed questions, with single or multiple answers. The participants were 63 dentists, mostly women (77.8%), aged between 30 and 39 years old (52.4%), more than half of them with a clinical experience of… Show more

“…It was stated that an extremely high number of repairs occurs, exceeding 60% of the number of dentures manufactured each year [19]. A similar finding is also seen in other studies [11,20] where it was concluded that a very common type of repair concerns the detachment of denture teeth, both in complete and partial dentures. Although excessive occlusal load on denture teeth during mastication can be responsible for teeth detachment, other reasons have been reported in the literature.…”

“…Debonding could be caused by mismatched surface conditions at the tooth and base interface. This incompatibility is thought to be caused by two things: (a) contamination of the involved surfaces or (b) structural differences between the two components due to processing methods [19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. It has been estimated [11,26] that 22-30% of denture repairs concern tooth debonding, typically in the anterior portion of the denture.…”

“…Possible complications of acrylic dentures also appear in relation to the characteristics of the denture bases’ materials, including their wettability and microbial adhesion [ 36 ]. These required a series of interventions by dentists to optimize prosthodontic treatments [ 37 ].…”
