Pastoralism played a vital role in food production and sustaining its inhabitants in arid environment for millennia. However, national policies and development interventions in East African pastoral systems have often overlooked pastoralism while centered on the modernizat… Show more

“…Recurrent drought is influencing livestock production in the study area, which is in agreement with previous findings (Kassahun et al 2008;Tilahun et al 2016) in pastoral area of the country. Drought affects pasture availability in rangelands (Kassahun et al 2008;Gezahegn et al 2015), and this is reflected on livestock production and productivity around ANP, thus affecting pastoral livelihoods and food insecurity.…”

“…Similar to earlier studies conducted around ANP (Zeray 2008;Beyene 2012;Tilahun et al 2016), higher livestock holdings was reported in Afar households (19.2 ± 2.2), followed by Kereyu (12.6 ± 2.7), and Ittu (7.6 ± 1.9). The lower mean TLU in Ittu might be related with the strict sedentary agropastoral mode of life than the pastoral Afar and Kereyu ethnic groups (Beyene 2012;Gebeyehu et al 2016).…”

“…The authors attributed the declines to increase in land uses at the expense of grazing land among them, expansion of cultivation areas, clearing of land for settlement leading to loss of vegetation in the area. Tilahun et al (2016) also observed that livestock holdings on average was higher in non-intervened than The nomadic land-use site still supports large livestock numbers and herd mobility as compared to those which have been subdivided. The nomadic pastoral system maintains mobile, large-scale livestock movement and avoids heavy grazing pressure on grasslands as opposed to the semi-nomadic and sedentary systems (Groom and Western 2013;Western et al 2009).…”

“…People influence plant distribution and need management of invasions to reduce impacts and enhance benefit thus an understanding of social perspectives is important (Mulugeta, 2006). In recent years, growing bodies of literatures (Oba, 1998;Angassa et al, 2012;Tilahun et al, 2016) have tried to inform policy makers and development practitioners to recognize community's knowledge for sustainable management of their environment. Previous studies (Feye, 2007;Angassa et al, 2012;Tilahun et al, 2016) have also shown that communities' knowledge has a role to play in the advancement of scientific research and attainment of sustainable development goals.…”
