Perception and appreciation of plant biodiversity among experts and laypeople

Abstract: 1. Plant biodiversity, which is fundamental for the delivery of ecosystem services, is in decline. Yet, knowledge about how plant biodiversity is perceived and appreciated is scarce.2. We studied biologists' and laypeople's perception and appreciation for plant communities that differ in plant biodiversity, using ranges of plant biodiversity known to affect ecosystem services. We investigate species richness, species turnover and species evenness. A questionnaire based on photographs displaying artificial plan… Show more

“…Whereas knowledge alone is not enough to change students' attitudes and habits in interpreting the importance of plants (Aprianty & Nuraeni, 2018;von Kotzebue, 2022). Previous study explains that plant biodiversity is very important in efforts to maintain the ecosystem, but knowledge and awareness to maintain perception and care for plants is still very lacking (Breitschopf & Anne, 2023). There is very limited subject matter on plants taught in schools, which is one of the reasons for the emergence of the phenomenon of plant blindness.…”

“…Given the importance of biodiversity and the general public's difficulty in recognizing it [74][75][76][77], this study references Koo [61] to establish that higher species diversity and richness in forests indicate enhanced biodiversity.…”
