Percentile values for flexibility tests in youths aged 6 to 17 years: Influence of weight status

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of weight status on flexibility performance in Spanish youths (1475 boys and 1237 girls) aged 6Á17 years, and to provide percentile values for two flexibility tests. Flexibility was assessed by the sit-and-reach and shoulder stretch tests. Participants were categorized as underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese. Girls had significantly better scores than boys in all the studied tests, except in the right-shoulder stretch test in the 6Á7, 14Á15 … Show more

“…For example, the studies on European children and adolescents found that boys performed better in cardiorespiratory fitness (10,(19)(20)(21)(22), muscular strength (10,20,23,24), or speed (10,20,25). However, the same studies found that girls performed better in flexibility tests (10,20,26). Additionally, the same studies found a plateau approximately at the same ages.…”

“…A major concern, though, has arisen from the results of such test, since a considerable number of subjects scored 0: indeed, the test measures the total time in seconds by which the subject is able to sustain a contraction hanging on a horizontal bar, through his arms in a flexed position, and being able to maintain his chin above the bar; indeed such conditions make the test difficult to execute. Moreover, the test is weight dependent, underlining the low accuracy of such test in an adolescent population [161] and suggesting to consider some other test for the assessment of muscular endurance. (Table 5).…”
