Perceived social support in adults with autism spectrum disorder and attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Abstract: Perceived social support (PSS) has been related to physical and mental well-being in typically developing individuals, but systematic characterizations of PSS in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are limited. We compared self-report ratings of the multidimensional scale of PSS (MSPSS) among age- and IQ-matched groups of adults (18-58 years) with cognitively high-functioning ASD (N = 41), or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; N = 69), and neurotypical controls (NC; N = 69). Accompanying group comparis… Show more

“…Test-retest reliability for the total MSPSS score is reported as .85 and for each subscale as follows: (a) Support from Significant Other .72; (b) Support from Family .85; and (c) Support from Friends .75. The MSPSS has been used in research with mothers of autistic children [ 44 ] and with autistic adult populations [ 45 , 46 ].…”

“…Participants in Asia reported lower levels of social support ( m = 56.45 (19.40)) compared to those in North America (66.40 (14.25)) and Europe (65.22 (14.88)), F (2, 160) = 3.67, p = .028. Although the MSPSS has been used successfully in other studies with adults with ASD with authors reporting strong reliability estimates (e.g., Alvarez‐Fernandez et al, 2017 ), it is not clear whether it has been used with adults with other intellectual or developmental disabilities.…”
