“…Stressful life events-such as school problems and peer conflict-can cause anger, depression, and anxiety (Aseltine, Gore, and Gordon, 2000). In addition, isolation and lack of peer support may lead to depression and remove social buffers against adverse psychological consequences of stressful events (Elgar and Arlett, 2002;Windle, 1992). School and peer dynamics, in turn, may influence the likelihood of police encounters.…”

“…Internal consistency in the present study was a=0.89. The CAPS has been found to correlate positively with peer-reported popularity and negatively with selfreported conflict and depressive symptoms (Cavell & Kelly, 1994;Elgar & Arlett, 2002). Kohn & Milrose, 1993) The IHSSRLE is a 41-item measure of daily hassles in adolescents and was designed to be less contaminated by subjective distress than other hassles scales.…”

“…Researchers have also found that stress related to interpersonal conflict also increases the risk of behavioural problems in adolescents (Patterson, DeBaryshe, & Ramsey, 1989;Coyne & Downey, 1991). Studies have found that most adolescents tend to encounter several conflict situations every day (Laursen & Collins, 1994) and that more adolescent conflict is closely associated with negative affect (Elgar & Arlett, 2002). Thus, conflict, daily hassles and life events are three salient sources of adolescent stress.…”

“…To address these issues, cross-lagged correlations and regressions were utilized in this study to examine temporal relations between maternal depressive symptoms and three domains of child functioning: hyperactivity, aggression, and emotional problems. Therefore, this study utilized partial cross-lagged correlations to control for within-time association (e.g., Elgar & Arlett, 2002) and Kenny's (1975) test for consistency in both test-retest correlations (quasi-stationarity) and crosssectional correlations (synchronicity). The objectives of the study were to (a) determine whether the influence of maternal depressive symptoms on child adjustment problems is less than or greater than the influence of child adjustment problems on maternal mood and (b) examine the magnitude of these mutual influences over a 4-year period, independent of prior symptoms and shared risk factors.…”
