Perceived Neighborhood Social Resources as Determinants of Prosocial Behavior in Early Adolescence

Abstract: The present study aims to develop an integrative model that links neighborhood behavioral opportunities and social resources (neighborhood cohesion, neighborhood friendship and neighborhood attachment) to prosocial (sharing, helping, empathic) behavior in early adolescence, taking into account the potential mediating role of perceived support of friends. Path analysis was used to test the proposed theoretical model in a sample of 1,145 Italian early adolescents (6th through 8th graders). More perceived opportu… Show more

“…Living in a neighborhood with higher social capital allows the adolescent to look outside the family for support and to access resources. Important resources include non-familial adult role models or pro-social peer groups that promote positive behavioral outcomes (Lenzi et al 2012; Mattis et al 2009; Stanton-Salazar 2011; Wandersman and Nation 1998). Furthermore, as this finding suggests, a fruitful area for future research is the development and evaluation of interventions intended to enhance neighborhood social processes.…”

“…Classical SEM fit indices in models without latent variables are not particularly informative because they are often not sensitive to errors in model equations that are expressed from the W matrix. A Monte Carlo simulation to demonstrate this is available elsewhere (Lenzi et al 2012b). For the mediation effect laavan uses the normal approximation method, which is based on the delta method (Casella and Berger 2002).…”

“…Interestingly, the impact of this variable was greater than the presence of parental conflict which is a closer variable to child development. This suggests that interaction in extra-family social contexts, especially the community, has an important influence on the formation and expression of moral values, social norms and behavioral patterns (Lenzi et al, 2012;Schmidt, Pierce, & Stoddard, 2016;Vieno, Santinello, Pastore, & Perkins, 2007).…”
