Perceived Neighborhood Safety, Recovery Capital, and Successful Outcomes Among Mothers 10 years After Substance Abuse Treatment

Abstract: This study examines perceived neighborhood characteristics associated with successful outcome among mothers 10 years after being treated for substance use disorders. Data were obtained from 713 mothers first studied at admission to drug treatment in California in 2000-2002 and followed-up in 2009-2011. At follow-up, 53.6% of mothers had a successful outcome (i.e., no use of illicit drugs and not involved with the criminal justice system). Perceived neighborhood safety almost doubled the odds of success. Percei… Show more

“…CalTOP recruited approximately 17,770 adults admitted to 43 SUD treatment programs in 13 California counties during 2000–2002 (Hser, Evans, Huang, & Anglin, 2004; Evans & Hser, 2004). A prospective study (Evans, Li, Pierce, & Hser, 2013; Evans, Li, Buoncristiani, & Hser, 2014; Hser, Evans, & Huang, 2011) obtained data in 2009 on mental health services utilized by 4,447 CalTOP women from the California Department of Mental Health (DMH), which tracks psychiatric diagnoses and services provided by public mental health facilities. Study procedures were approved by Institutional Review Boards at UCLA and the California Health and Human Services Agency.…”

“…The few studies that have examined these associations for adult women’s outcomes have largely been smaller scale, focusing on specific areas or subsets of mothers, such as those recovering from substance use disorders (Clark et al 2008 ; DeSantis et al 2016 ; Evans et al 2011 ). An important exception to this is a study by Huang et al ( 2018 ) that examined the association between health outcomes and a dichotomous measure indicating whether mothers witnessed or were victimized by any type of violence, including shootings, attacks with other forms of weapons, and being hit.…”
