Given the inconsistent ndings in the literature, we examined age-cohort differences in various personal control judgements over the lifespan (N = 1623; ages 14-85). For three distinct life domains (personal, social, and societal), participants rated their amount of personal control, the goal importance, the degree of control striving, and, in comparison with sameaged peers, their relative control in each domain. Within this broad lifespan range, the developmental trends showed, as expected, different trajectories depending upon the type of control dimension and the nature of the life domain. The differential nature of these age-cohort trends have important implications for understanding the inconsistent ndings reported in the literature, namely, that depending on the nature of the life domain, the type of control dimension, and the age range tested, the trajectories can either increase, decrease, or remain stable. Rehabilitation is influenced by the individual's abilities and resources and extent to which they are used. This study explored self-actualization (capacity to maximize use of one's abilities and resources) in 37 individuals attending in-patient rehabilitation following a stroke by (1) comparing the level of self-actualization of the participants to the level of self-actualization of 562 healthy community-dwelling individuals without stroke; (2) assessing changes in the level of self-actualization during rehabilitation (admission vs. discharge); and (3) exploring the relationships between self-actualization and changes in functional independence during rehabilitation, length of stay in the rehabilitation unit and change in living environment at discharge. Self-actualization was assessed with the measure of actualization of potential. The results showed that individuals with stroke had significantly lower self-actualization levels (P<0.001) than community-dwelling individuals without stroke. Self-actualization levels remained stable during rehabilitation (P=0.07). No significant relationships were found between self-actualization and changes in functional independence (P=0.36), length of stay (P=0.82) or change in living environment (P=0.65). This study suggests that many individuals with stroke are poorly actualized and self-actualization levels do not improve during rehabilitation. Further studies are needed to explore the relationship between self-actualization and other outcome measures in poststroke rehabilitation such as depressive symptoms or social participation.

РезюмеТази статия представя различни аспекти на самореализацията -свързани със здравословния статус, със самоактуализацията, с някои умения и способности (специално механично-техническите), със самоопределението и с адаптацията и професионалната самореализация на студенти. Бяха проведени три изследвания в периода 2011-2012 в България. 73 студенти бяха изследвани относно тяхната потребност от самоактуализация чрез модификация на скала от въпросника за потребности на Gercheva-Nestorova, базиран на теорията на Maslow. Повече от половината от тях се стремят към самоактуализация в средна и висока степен. 55 студенти бяха изследвани чрез МТА -компютризирана методика за изследване на механично-технически способности, част от Виенската тестова система. Ниските и средните резултати преобладаваха. 42 студенти бяха изследвани относно тяхната адаптация към учебния процес. 1/3 от отговорите им индикираха тяхната не добра адаптираност в учебния процес, отнасяща се до тяхната професионална самореализация (нежелана специалност, проблеми с изпитите и с преподавателите, липса на желание за учене). Удовлетворените студенти, които изучават желана специалност, са по-добре адаптирани. Повече от половината от студентите в тази извадка се стремят към професионална самореализация чрез изучаваната от тях специалност, независимо от първоначалната им професионална ориентация. AbstractThis paper deals with different aspects of self-realisation -related to the health status, to the self-actualization, to some skills and abilities (especially mechanical and technical ones), to the self-determinism, and to the students' adaptation and professional self-realisation. Three studies were conducted in 2011 and 2012 in Bulgaria. 73 students were studied about their need for self-actualization by means of a modified scale from Gercheva-Nestorova's questionnaire for needs based on Maslow's theory. More than a half of them strived for self-actualization in a medium and high degree. 55 students were studied by means of MTA -a computerized method for measuring mechanical and technical abilities that is a part of Vienna Test System. The low and medium results prevailed. 42 students were studied about their adaptation to the educational process. 1/3 of the students' responses indicated their maladaptation in the educational process concerning their professional self-realisation (undesired subject, problems with the exams and with the lecturers, lack of desire for study). The satisfied students who studied a desired subject were better adapted. More than a half of the students in this sample strived for professional self-realisation through the specialty they studied in, independent on their initial professional orientation.
