Perceived Competence: A Common Core for Self-Efficacy and Self-Concept?

Abstract: This study uses Bandura's Multidimensional Scales of Perceived Self-Efficacy (MSPSE; Bandura, 1990) and Harter's Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA; Harter, 1988) to examine the extent to which self-efficacy and competency-related elements of the self-concept are independent constructs. Factor analysis of data provided by 778 high school students revealed that when measured using domain-general measures such as the MSPSE and SPPA, self-efficacy and competency self-concept do not represent totally se… Show more

“…Similarly, perceived competence, which is a related construct that reflects broader perceptions and knowledge (Bong and Skaalvik 2003;Hughes et al 2011;Klassen and Usher 2010), also affects academic motivation and learning outcomes (Bong and Skaalvik 2003;Harter 1990;Ma and Kishor 1997). Moreover, when students' confidence in their own capabilities increases, they tend to use more cognitive and metacognitive strategies irrespective of previous achievement or ability (Pajares 2006) and the willingness to invest mental effort in a task changes as well (Bandura 1977;Salomon 1983Salomon , 1984.…”

“…Ehrman, Leaver, & Oxford, 2003;Mills, Pajares, & Herron, 2007;Tremblay & Gardner, 1995). According to Hughes, Galbraith, and White (2011), self-efficacy and the competency self-concept do not represent totally separate and distinct constructs, as they both have perceived competence at their core. Bong and Skaalvik (2003) also argued that both concepts are highly similar, although they also distinguished important differences.…”

“…Not surprisingly, it also comprises matters of competence. Hughes, Galbraith, and White (2011) contended that self-efficacy signifies the cognitive perception of competence, which bear comparison with Pajares and Schunk (2002), who noted that perception of self-efficacy answers "Can I" questions. Additional refinements have appeared in the literature.…”

“…Also, attitudes were highly positive to begin with and did not change over time. Creating a scale to measure self-efficacy and attitudes toward child welfare work is another limitation since there are existing scales for self-efficacy (Chen & Scannapieco, 2010;Ellett, 2000;Hughes et al, 2011). Although reliability of those scales were tested and presented, further study needs to examine the validity of the scale.…”
