Abstract: We surveyed 601 Indonesian high school students (57.6% girls, mean age = 16.4 years) and investigated whether perceived career congruence between adolescents and their parents served as moderator between goal orientation (i.e., mastery-approach, performance-approach, and performance-avoid) and career aspirations. “…Extremely high levels of parental expectations may make children feel overwhelmed and experience confusion, indecision, and/or ambivalence when choosing career directions; in contrast, moderate levels of parental expectations may fuel children's motivation and promote their career aspirations, plans, and/or actions without invoking too much pressure (Leung et al., ; Meece et al., ; Sawitri & Creed, ; Sawitri et al., ; Sawitri et al., ). Thus, in addition to the other plausible characteristics, an optimal profile seems to be characterized by moderate rather than extremely high levels of parental expectations.…”

Thus, focusing on both adaptability and ambivalence can help more adequately represent the construct of career development.…”

“…8 In the career literature, congruence with parents regarding career matters is an important career-related skill for adolescents, especially for those who live in collectivistic contexts. 9,10,11 In collectivistic cultures, individuals define themselves according to their membership in groups (e.g., family). They also emphasize group norms, goals, and needs over their personal ones.…”
