Background: Cigarette smoke can affect macrophage metabolism by activating macrophages to release leukotrien B4, IL-8 and TNFα which lead to increased production of superoxide (O2-) and H2O2 and also cause oxidative damage to macromolecules such as lipids, proteins, DNA that can eliminate antioxidants and form free radicals such as Nitric Oxide (NO).
