Indonesia is the largest garlic importer in the world, relies on imports for over 95% of its garlic needs. To address this import dependence and meet domestic demands, the Government initiated the National Garlic Development Program. However, the program has yet to achieve the targeted production, even the development of garlic faces many obstacles that threaten its sustainability. The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to determine the sustainability status of garlic production based on the dimensions of sustainability, and (2) to identify the leverage factors for the sustainability of garlic farming. The research location was purposively selected in Temanggung District, Central Java, which is Indonesia’s largest garlic production center. The sustainability status of garlic production was analyzed using multidimensional scaling (MDS). The results indicate that garlic production exhibits a less sustainable status across multiple dimensions. The identification of leverage variables, suggested interventions involve the following measures; enhancing irrigation systems and minimizing reliance on chemical fertilizers, providing price and marketing guarantees, reducing farmers’ dependency on subsidies, expanding the cultivated land through the application of advanced technologies for mass production of superior seeds, strengthening the involvement of agricultural extension officers, fostering consumer preferences and farmers’ engagement in garlic cultivation.

Growth and Yield of Seedless Watermelon Plants in Response to Soil Amendment Application

This research aims to evaluate the effect of soil amendment concentration on the growth and yield of seedless watermelon plants. This research was carried out at the agricultural land that located in Kumendung Village, Muncar District, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia. Four soil amendment concentrations (P1: 7.5 ml/liter, P2: 10 ml/liter, P3: 12.5 ml/liter, P4: 15 ml/liter) were tested on 132 watermelon plants in a randomized block experimental design. The results showed that the concentration of soil amendment affected the nutrient content of the soil with the highest concentrations in P1 and P3. Even though soil pH is relatively stable, the concentration of soil amendment affects the nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) content in the soil. In terms of plant growth, P3 concentration consistently provide a better plant height at various stages of observation. The fruit yield is also affected by the used of concentration of soil amendment, P3 treatment produces the highest fruit weight and fruit yield of P1 concentration have the highest level of sweetness. Based on the observation results, application of the right soil amendment concentration will increase growth and yield of seedless watermelon, which in this study the best yield obtained with P3 (12.5 ml/liter) application. These results could give an important implication to improving the productivity of seedless watermelon cultivation, especially in areas that have less fertile soil, such as Kumendung Village, Banyuwangi.

Nanoparticle has been used in agricultural practices such as soil ameliorant. Nanoparticle of volcanic ash and biofertilizer were applied to improve some soil characteristics of Inceptisols. The objective of this research was to optimize the benefit of nanoparticle of volcanic ash and biofertilizer in reducing soil acidity, increasing organic carbon content, and increasing basic cations of Inceptisols. Volcanic ash was obtained from the eruption of Mt. Merapi in Central Java. Nanoparticle was grinded in Nanotechnology and Graphene Research Center, Universitas Padjadjaran. Phosphate solubilizing fungi was used as biofertilizer, isolated in Soil Microbiology Laboratory, Universitas Padjadjaran. A two factors randomized experimental design was used in this research. Nanoparticle of volcanic ash was used as first factor (four levels: 0%, 2%, 4% and 6% of soil weight percentages). Biofertilizer was used as second factor (two levels: 0 and 10 g.kg-1). These two treatments were combined and mixed evenly and incubated for three months in field condition. Every month during those three months a few soil samples were taken to analyze the change of soil characteristics. The results showed that the treatments increased organic carbon content and potassium basic cation but had no effect to soil acidity.
