In this paper, a feasible method was proposed for the chlorine and fluorine determination in eye-pencil samples using ion chromatography (IC). The microwave-induced combustion (MIC) was used to digest up to 200 mg of a sample, with 50 mg of microcrystalline cellulose as a combustion aid and only water for analytes absorption. Cl and F recoveries were 105 ± 1 and 93 ± 5%, respectively, when standard solutions were used in the recovery tests. Certified reference materials (CRM) were also digested mixed to the sample, and no significant difference between the obtained results and the certified values was observed. Precision was assessed in terms of repeatability and intermediate precision, with relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 9%. Limits of detection (LOD) for Cl and F were 37 and 4 mg kg-1 , respectively. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UEA) was also evaluated; however, the results were not satisfactory. The proposed method was suitable for Cl and F determination in eye-pencil because it proved to be accurate, precise and safe, and also minimized waste generation and had high throughput.

Because of the extreme persistence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and their associated risks, the Madrid Statement argues for stopping their use where they are deemed not essential or when safer alternatives exist. To determine when uses of PFASs have an essential function in modern society, and when they do not, is not an easy task. Here, we: 1) develop the concept of “essential use” based on an existing approach described in the Montreal Protocol, 2) apply the concept to various uses of PFASs to determine the feasibility of elimination or substitution of PFASs in each use category, and 3) outline the challenges for phasing out uses of PFASs in society. In brief, we developed three distinct categories to describe the different levels of essentiality of individual uses. A phase-out of many uses of PFASs can be implemented because they are not necessary for the betterment of society in terms of health and safety, or because functional alternatives are currently available that can be substituted into these products or applications. Some specific uses of PFASs would be considered essential because they provide for vital functions and are currently without established alternatives. However, this essentiality should not be considered as permanent; rather, constant efforts are needed to search for alternatives. We provide a detailed description of several ongoing uses of PFASs and discuss whether these uses are essential or nonessential according to the three essentiality categories. We suggest applying this concept of essential uses to all uses of PFASs, and considering its use also for other chemicals of concern.

Deciphering the Mechanistic Basis for Perfluoroalkyl‐Protein Interactions

Although rarely used in nature, fluorine has emerged as an important elemental ingredient in the design of proteins with altered folding, stability, oligomerization propensities, and bioactivity. Adding to the molecular modification toolbox, here we report the ability of privileged perfluorinated amphiphiles to noncovalently decorate proteins to alter their conformational plasticity and potentiate their dispersion into fluorous phases. Employing a complementary suite of biophysical, in‐silico and in‐vitro approaches, we establish structure‐activity relationships defining these phenomena and investigate their impact on protein structural dynamics and intracellular trafficking. Notably, we show that the lead compound, perfluorononanoic acid, is 106 times more potent in inducing non‐native protein secondary structure in select proteins than is the well‐known helix inducer trifluoroethanol, and also significantly enhances the cellular uptake of complexed proteins. These findings could advance the rational design of fluorinated proteins, inform on potential modes of toxicity for perfluoroalkyl substances, and guide the development of fluorine‐modified biologics with desirable functional properties for drug discovery and delivery applications.
