Peptide and carbohydrate complexes of nickel in human kidney

Abstract: The predominant renal and urinary forms of nickel consist of low-Mr complexes. Similarities in the nature of these complexes have been found in kidneys of rats exposed parenterally to NiCl2 and in rat kidneys treated with NiCl2 in vitro. Similar complexes have also been identified after treatment of bovine and human renal soluble fractions with NiCl2. The bulk of nickel in all cases is associated with sulphated oligosaccharide fractions containing uronic acids and neutral sugars. This binding is non-specific, … Show more

“…Through the interaction between these poly-functional molecules and metal ions in living organisms, the modification of the biological function of both counterparts may be expected [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. The investigation on the interactions between metal ions and simple sugars can improve the understanding of metal ion interactions with sugar residues of biologically important compounds, which needs to assign the binding hydroxyl or other groups, the change of hydrogen bonds and also to characterize the metal ion coordination of carbohydrates monitoring the ligand conformation and configuration changes forced by the complexation processes.…”

“…It is just such interactions that influence many biological processes [9][10][11][12][13]. In our previous work [14][15][16][17][18][19], thermodynamic studies of some ternary electrolyte-saccharide-water systems have been carried out using galvanic cells, densimetry and conductance.…”

“…On the other hand, many metal ions such as Cu 2þ , Mn 2þ , etc., occur in biological systems and play a vital role in various metabolic activities. Coordination among metal and carbohydrate may involve in many biochemical processes [1][2][3][4]. Therefore, the studies on the interaction between saccharides and metal ions, being an important branch of bioinorganic chemistry, provide an accessible route to enhance our understanding on the chemical/biological nature of carbohydrate molecules.…”
