People versus Information: The Evolution of Mobile Technology

Abstract: Abstract. This reports research on users' attitudes towards and use of GSM devices and discusses the implications these have for the future evolution of hand-held devices. It argues that current usage patterns suggest that there is unlikely to be a widespread convergence of information accessing devices and person to person communication devices. It also argues that the latter devices and their associated applications could provide much richer opportunities for communication behaviours than is currently availa… Show more

“…Studies within this frame usually approach technical issues of connectivity, network-based applications, context-aware systems, technological and environmental infrastructure, technology pervasiveness, mobile technology use and so forth. Most importantly, they discuss how these elements may serve the purpose of supporting people who work in and across different locations ( Two major concerns for these researchers are the usability of the computer technologies available for nomadicity and the user experience that they provide (Gorlenko and Merrick 2003;Harper 2003;York and Pendharkar 2004;MurraySmith 2009). A common finding is that, when issues inherent to nomadicity are not well understood and considered during the design phase, new technologies will not work in the way they were intended to (Luff and Heath 1998).…”

“…Communication remains the first and foremost function of a mobile phone [11,18] and its horizon has further expanded by Internet access. In our study, we spotted several cases of voice services such as Skype and Fring, but far more textual communications.…”
