In recent years there have been a high amount of citizen initiatives that address the complex problems of the contemporary city. There are empty or disused spaces that have been reused for urban gardens, for social use, to encourage integration and civic activities activation, etc. Traditional architectural processes do not provide realistic solutions to these initiatives that, along with limited financial resources, have led to the emergence of architectures and self-constructed facilities, almost as an emergency mode, without necessary planning, media and constructive knowledge. The democratization of technology, thanks to laboratories of digital production, combined with knowledge of the properties of different surfaces through the CAD-CAM tools, offers new opportunities for the development of a lightweight, flexible and low impact architecture, very according to the needs of citizens' initiatives that naturally arise in our cities. The new existing scenario contemplates the figure of the architect, or engineer, not only as an agent of the market, but as a professional able to propose efficient solutions to problems from within, bringing their specific knowledge and serving as bridges between the new technological solutions and the challenges of society.

Con la aparición de las primeras computadoras de la historia, un abanico de nuevas posibilidades se hacía presente en la sociedad contemporánea, generando toda una gama de novedosos escenarios, tanto para la investigación como para la enseñanza. Un nuevo modo de ver y entender el mundo había nacido, con fuertes cambios tecnológicos y una inusitada accesibilidad hacia diferentes campos del saber, generando un proceso que Alvin Toffler denominó el “Shock del futuro”. En este contexto, la conservación y rehabilitación del patrimonio arquitectónico y urbano, no se encuentran exentas de nuevos planteos. Influenciada por nuevas teorías y tecnologías, ve cuestionadas su especificidad, adoptando saberes de diversos campos. A partir de estos supuestos, y con una mirada que hace foco en la tecnología digital, este trabajo tiene como objetivo exponer las ventajas de su uso, como una herramienta exploratoria de estructuras complejas, capaz de construir y relacionar representaciones simplificadas del mundo real, que nos ayuden a comprender, investigar e interpretar las cualidades arquitectónicas y urbanísticas de una ciudad, en un periodo histórico determinado. Para ello, se propone el estudio de casos, aprovechando las potencialidades de un instrumento de análisis eficiente y funcional, que contribuya en la construcción colectiva del conocimiento para las futuras generaciones.

Within the broad context of teaching and research, the results of a project involving a pavilion based on developable wooden surfaces, parametric design, and digital fabrication are presented through the collaboration of Ibero-American universities. The project addresses applications of wood to architecture that involves the CNC cutting of plates, thanks to the properties of developable surfaces. The in-depth knowledge of the geometrical properties of these surfaces opens up a wide range of morphological exploration and new constructive solutions. The proposed system provides a creative response to the criteria of limited material resources (a thin sheet of material) and low production and assembly costs as an analogy with natural construction. This high-tech and low-cost system, together with the Bio-mimetic design, offers an ecocompatible proposal to the three processes under study: design, manufacture, and assembly.
