Penile Blood Flow and Musculovascular Events During Sleep-Related Erections of Middle-Aged Men

Abstract: The relationships among penile segmental pulsatile blood flow, pelvic musculovascular events, phases of nocturnal penile tumescence, and sleep stages were studied by all-night polysomnography in 23 healthy middle-aged men. Penile blood flow peaked during maximal tumescence. Bursts of phasic musculovascular activity were more frequent during ascending and maximal tumescence than during detumescence and baseline. Both penile blood flow and the number of musculovascular events increased during REM sleep. These da… Show more

“…In humans, BS muscle activity has been recorded during erection and ejaculation in response to masturbation (Gerstenberg et al, 1990). Perineal muscle activity also accompanies penile erection cycles during sleep in humans (Karakan et al, 1987), and the contribution of the BS muscles in this erectile context has been pointed out in humans and rats (Lavoisier et al, 1988;Schmidt et al, 1994). The variety of contexts in which BS muscle activities have been measured suggests the intervention of different neural pathways in its control.…”

“…4 The latter point is confirmed by the fluid compressibility equation: dPϭϪK (dV/V) (ie, the pressure (P) increases when the volume (V) decreases, with K being the constant bulk modulus or coefficient of elasticity of blood). Available data in humans indicate that ICM contractions may induce important SS ICPs, 5,6,[15][16][17][18][19][20][21] regardless of whether the ICM contractions are reflexive or voluntary. 5,16,22 Therefore, coital penile rigidity is achieved according to the following sequence: coital movement 3 glans pressure variations 3 ICR triggering 3 ICM contractions 3 SS ICP 3 penile rigidity.…”
