PENGARUH PEMBERIAN EKSTRAK KULIT BUAH MANGGIS (Garcinia mangostana L.) TERHADAP KUALITAS SPERMATOZOA WISTAR JANTAN (Rattus norvegicus) YANG DIBERI PAPARAN SUHU PANAS

Abstract: High temperatures lead to oxidative stress which can decrease the quality of spermatozoa. Mangosteen rind contains polyphenols inter alia xanthones which have antioxidant properties. As free radical scavengers, the xanthones provide fast hydrogen atom movement into the lipid radicals and turn them into more stable forms. This study aimed to determine the effect of extract of mangosteen rind on wistar male sperm quality exposed to heat. This was an experimental study with a posttest randomized control group des… Show more

“…Heat is a form of physical stress that will trigger the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or free radicals (Ermiza, 2012). ROS causes oxidative stress due to the overproduction of free radicals, and thereby the oxidant level was higher than antioxidants (Umar et al, 2015). The oxidation of cell membranes also harms DNA and RNA (Thompson et al, 2014;Yusrizal, 2017) and triggers apoptosis (Shiraishi et al, 2010).…”

“…The oxidation of cell membranes also harms DNA and RNA (Thompson et al, 2014;Yusrizal, 2017) and triggers apoptosis (Shiraishi et al, 2010). Oxidative stress will cause damage to Leydig cell membranes (Umar et al, 2015) and caused a decreasing number of Leydig cells (Yusrizal, 2017). The Leydig cell is a producer of testosterone.…”

“…In the process of spermatogenesis, Sertoli cells function to nourish spermatogonia cells to develop into primary spermatocytes (Wang et al, 2019). Heat stress exposure to the number of Sertoli cells will cause oxidative stress, a condition where free radicals exceed the body's number of antioxidants (Umar et al, 2015). The low amount of antioxidants in the body cannot protect Sertoli cells from heat stress in the form of free radicals.…”

“…This hormone influences spermatozoa forming and maturation in seminiferous tubule. This condition can optimize the spermatogenesis process resulted in the increases of spermatozoa concentration [14,15] and motility [16]. One of antioxidant function donate one of its electrons towards the oxidant compound so it blocks their activity [17].…”
