Pia edamame attracts consumers as a typical food of Jember Regency. However, its development involves a high level of competition because of various types and quality of similar products with competitive prices. It then improves the opportunities for consumers in selecting the product according to their expectations to meet the satisfaction. Pia edamame of Said's Roti (SR), therefore, needs to develop its product to achieve high competitiveness as a typical food of Jember. This study aims to know the consumers attributes requirements and strategies to improve the competitive predominance of pia edamame SR. One of the methods used to assess and interpret consumer expectation is Quality Function Deployment (QFD). Application of QFD in this research, in the context of the process of quality improvement of pia edamame SR, provides various important information regarding consumer expectations and requirement. The results show that the goal values of attributes for consumer demand on packaging and flavor variant of pia edamame SR have not met the target, thus require improvement. Besides, the value of benchmarking was lower than its two competitors on the several technical responses. Hence, pia edamame SR requires a planning of competitive strategies by improving packaging and increasing the flavor variant.

Pasteurized milk products in Malang Regency hold a significant opportunity to be developed. The number of existing dairy farmers is a supporting factor for the producers in obtaining raw milk supplies. The X milk cooperative unit is one of the producers of pasteurized milk in Malang Regency, in addition to other dairy business competitors. The intense competition forces the X milk cooperative unit to maintain and improve the quality of its milk product to satisfy consumers' demands. The objectives of this research are to determine consumers' demand and formulate corrective actions to improve consumers' satisfaction. QFD is a method of structured product planning and development to ensure that customers' needs and demands can be accommodated in a product. The results of data processing suggest that some quality attributes of milk products that need to be improved based on their degree of importance were milk composition consistency and halal assurance from "Majelis Ulama Indonesia" (MUI) an Indonesian Ulema Council. The right composition of milk keeps the milk taste preferred by the customers consistent, the smell less fishy and the shelf life constant. The second rank attribute was registering to MUI certification, as this certification will increase the product's competitiveness.

Continuous quality improvement is essential to ensure the competitiveness of manufacturing industries. Design of Experiments, Statistical Process Control and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis are common tools for improving quality. This study proposes a new tool that could encompass quality improvement steps comprehensively, namely Quality Improvement Matrix. This tool integrates several techniques which are House of Quality, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Root Cause Analysis. Quality Improvement Matrix covers identification of defects and its root causes, measuring the magnitude of defects (source of defects), formulating alternatives of solutions for reducing root cause of defects and selecting effective solutions to be implemented. Quality Improvement Matrix is developed by following a similar approach as House of Risk. Thus, it also consists of two matrixes that represent two major stages. The first stage is the identification and prioritizing root causes of defect. Then, the second stage is formulating and selecting solutions for improvements.
