Pencil beam all-optical ultrasound imaging

Abstract: A miniature, directional fibre-optic acoustic source is presented that employs geometrical focussing to generate a nearly-collimated acoustic pencil beam. When paired with a fibre-optic acoustic detector, an all-optical ultrasound probe with an outer diameter of 2.5 mm is obtained that acquires a pulse-echo image line at each probe position without the need for image reconstruction. B-mode images can be acquired by translating the probe and concatenating the image lines, and artefacts resulting from probe posi… Show more

“…Although photoacoustic transmitters were integrated with optical fibers, it is not easy to implement a focusing scheme due to fabrication challenges. There are only a few work reported for imaging and therapy . In addition, although there exists various efficient photoacoustic composites recently developed, one may need to further improve the conversion efficiencies of existing photoacoustic materials or find alternative photoacoustic materials with a higher conversion efficiency.…”

“…Thus, the lateral resolution of the system was dependent on the imaging depth and decreased with depth; at its widest the lateral resolution was approximately 2.0 mm. The use of a larger diameter ultrasound transmitter, or one with a concave surface, would lead to improved directivity, and thus improved lateral resolutions [23].…”

“…There have been no optical technologies directly utilized in the diagnosis or treatment of ICAS. Alles et al 46 were the first to image ex vivo aortic tissue with an optically transmitted acoustic beam. They demonstrated side-branch blood vessels with great accuracy (Fig.…”
