Cooperative learning is a student-centered learning technique that can be considered a learning strategy for improving student performance both intellectually and in soft skill acquisition. Changesin curriculum structure in vocational institutions, because of the TVET transformation in 2012, have had an unforeseen influence on teaching and learning, whereas in the prior framework, a detailed teaching guideline was supplied compared to the latest structure. Teachers with inadequate knowledge and experience in learning strategies struggled to execute the new curriculum structure due to the lack of depth in these recent curriculum structure. This may be seen in the case of construction drawing subjects, where there were originally 14 main topics but now there are just four. Thus, the goal of this research is to help these teachers by offering a guideline for creating lesson plans that use a cooperative learning strategy. The aim of this paper is to identify and highlight the important component in the creation of a lesson plan using cooperative learning. For this investigation, the fuzzy Delphi technique was used. The main instrument for this study is a questionnaire survey that was developed utilizing a construct identified through literature and the results of a previous needs analysis. A total of 15 expert panels were chosen as the sample, which included university lecturers, vocational college instructors, officers from the Ministry of Education's Technical and Vocational Training Division, and industry representatives. The data was analyzed with the help of Microsoft Excel FDM. Visual skills, Cooperative Student Team Achievement Division (STAD), Power Point, and demonstrations components have been recognized as the major component to include in the lesson plan based on the analysis. With these components identified, a good lesson plan guideline for the next phase of this study can be constructed. It is envisaged that the development of such guidelines would help to elevate the practice of teaching and learning to the next level.

HOTS in Quadratic Equations: Teaching Style Preferences and Challenges Faced by Malaysian Teachers

The purpose of this study is to identify the teaching styles and problems faced by teachers as they attempt to cultivate higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in the topic of quadratic equations. This study used a qualitative approach via structured interview involving four participants who are experienced mathematics teachers from three districts in Malaysia. Data obtained were analysed using the ATLAS.ti 8 software by dividing the transcripts into small codes based on thematic analysis. The results revealed that Malaysian teachers have limited and general understanding about higherorder thinking skills for the topic of quadratic equations. The interview results also found that existing teaching styles mainly involve teacher-centred strategies that emphasise on the memorisation of procedures or facts as well as steps to solve quadratic equation problems. Among the challenges faced by teachers were stated as students' acceptance, lack of teaching aids, teaching strategies in the classroom, and students' thinking skills. The findings of this study can help to refine and improve several shortcomings and weak students can be exposed to the learning of higher-order thinking skills in quadratic equations via real-life projects. It is proposed for future research to focus on integrating digital literacy, such as Desmos Graphing Calculator, in cultivating higher-order thinking skills for quadratic equations.

The performance of an individual will increase if he has all the competencies required to carry out his duties and responsibilities. This survey study was conducted to identify the competency of science teachers in integrating Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in teaching and learning. The competency of science teachers is seen in three aspects based on the Iceberg Model which are knowledge, skills and attitude. 39 science teachers from 27 secondary schools in Besut district have responded to the questionnaire instrument disseminated in this study. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the frequency and percentage of respondent profiles involved. Descriptive statistics were also used to obtain mean and standard deviation to determine the competency level of respondents in HOTS. Analysis shows the level of competency of science teachers in terms of knowledge and attitude is high. The skills aspect shows a moderate level. The study suggested that science teachers did not explore various strategies and approaches in implementing HOTS. The high level of knowledge and attitudes should be manifested through teaching and learning that combines different approaches, questions with various cognitive level and activities that challenge the students’ thinking. This study provides a room for improvement for science teachers in enhancing the quality of teaching and learning and nurturing HOTS in students.
