Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the sense of territoriality Portuguese in America, from the representations of space in the narrative and cartography the first half of the eighteenth century, dealing especially the Tocantins River region. Considering the discourse of territoriality is built through the production of knowledge about space, the analysis in question noted the ways in which narratives on the river Tocantins appropriated and produced information and knowledge that constituted a Portuguese means to identify the territory and to empathize with him. The perception of the first forays into the Tocantins River was highlighted with the intention of checking the penetration through the territory, followed by the colonization process and consolidation of Portuguese bureaucracy in the region of Goiás. The contrast between the colonized spaces and indigenous resistance, opposing "civilization" and "wilderness", involved in the advancement of Portuguese territory and the consolidation of the speech that imposed a new look at space. Also the geographical perception of the Tocantins River served as the base so that it could analyze the discourses identified in colonial narratives, especially the letter from Father Antônio Vieira (1653), the memory of lieutenant Silva Braga (1734) and "Defeat the Tocantins River "José Diogo da Costa (1735). This analysis has shown the organization of information about the river, as well as the representations built on space, in order to identify the sense of territoriality which was evoked in them. The emphasis on the itinerary of travel of Jose Costa Diogo ("Defeat of the São Francisco river" and "Tocantins river Defeat") allowed analyzing the special status of a producer of information on the area, whose narrative remained directly related to production cartographic the second half of the eighteenth century. In this perspective walked to the perception of the Tocantins river in the cartography of this period, by its absence or its presence by analyzing the special relationship case between narrative "Tocantins River Defeat" by José Costa Diogo, and Carte l'Amérique Méridionale, D'Anville (1748). It is concluded that the processes of production of knowledge about the area participate in the construction of meaning in discourse on territoriality, and the introduction of the Tocantins river in the cartography of the first half of the eighteenth century was the subject of this statement of the Portuguese territoriality in America.
