Pellet as a Technological Nutrient within the Circular Economy Model: Comparative Analysis of Combustion Efficiency and CO and NOx Emissions for Pellets from Olive and Almond Trees

Abstract: This study analyzes the operation of Biomass System (BIO System) technology for the combustion of pellets from almond and olive trees within the circular economy model. Its aims are the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as well as waste removal and its energy use by reintroducing that waste into the production process as technological nutrient. In order to do so, combustion efficiency under optimal conditions at nominal power was analyzed. In addition, a TESTO 350-XL analyzer was employed to measure CO and… Show more

“…Besides, the circular economy is a sustainable development strategy that tackles the problems of environmental degradation and natural resource shortages through three principles: reduction, reuse and recycling of materials [5][6][7]. These principles define a circular system where all the materials are recycled, and all the energy comes from renewable sources that support activities and rebuild the ecosystem as well as support human health, society and healthy resources that generate value [8][9][10][11].…”

“…Several indicators of circular economy that allow to determine the efficiency of the use of resources, the minimization of waste generation and the conversion of pig manure into a technological nutrient are defined hereafter [5,6]. These indicators are considered within the circular economy model applied to the process of pig manure treatment.…”

“…In the circular economy model, waste is turned into resources, which are also called technological nutrients [5,6] and reintroduced into the production processes [7,8]. In this time of great transformations, the objective is to go from lineal economy, where society is based on waste production, consumption, and disposal, to the new model provided by circular economy, which is focused on the principles of the "3 Rs": reduction, reutilization, and recycling of as much waste as possible.…”

“…It understands the world as a complex interaction between economic, social, environmental and political systems. Management of the environment has been viewed as a determinant of business success [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Family business researchers must take environmental issues into consideration as they are increasingly important, especially since the development of theories such as functionality, ecology and development, which incorporate the lens of sustainability [10].…”
