Peliod Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a Domesticated Ferret (Mustela Putorius Furo)

Abstract: Abstract. Peliod hepatocellular carcinoma was diagnosed in a domesticated ferret (Mustela putorius furo). The diagnosis was made using immunohistochemical analysis, histologic examination, and the accepted classification schemes based on histomorphologic features. Bilateral, adrenocortical hyperplasia also was evident. Speculation about a possible association between the variant of hepatocellular neoplasia diagnosed in this animal and its adrenal pathologic changes was done.

“…In HCC, approximately 40% of HCCs with high histological grade also had PC as we previously reported . Immunohistochemical staining for cytokeratin 8 or 18 and endothelial cell markers such as CD31, CD34, factor VIII, and von Willebrand factor have been shown to be useful for distinguishing PHCC from vascular neoplasms occurring in the liver such as hemangioma or angiosarcoma …”

“…The most common disorders of the ferret biliary system are the presence of benign biliary cysts and metastatic adrenal tumours (Burgess 2007). Biliary duct adenoma, carcinoma, cystadenoma and cystadenocarcinoma have also been reported, but are uncommon (Reindel and Evans 1987, Garcia and others 2002, Jones and others 2006). Extrahepatic bile duct obstruction (EHBO) and gall bladder mucocele are well‐recognised syndromes in cats and dogs (Mayhew and others 2002).…”

“…Immunohistochemical analysis was necessary to differentiate hepatocellular neoplasia from vascular neoplasm, such as hemangiosarcoma. 88 Concurrent adrenocortical hyperplasia was observed in this case and the investigatord speculated about a possible association. 88 Hepatic carcinoma generally results in increased concentration of hepatic enzyme.…”

“…One case of peliod hepatocellular carcinoma was diagnosed in a ferret. 88 The left medial liver lobe was affected with a 12-cm diameter mass. The mass had rubbery-to-soft consistency and had completely effaced normal hepatic parenchyma.…”
