Pegylated Interferon‐α‐2a plus Ribavirin for Treatment‐Naive Asian Patients with Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 1 Infection: A Multicenter, Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: In treatment-naive Asian patients with HCV-1 infection, 48 weeks of pegylated IFN-alpha-2a plus ribavirin therapy is associated with a higher SVR rate, compared with 24 weeks of such therapy. Patients with a baseline serum HCV RNA level <800,000 IU/mL and who have achieved an RVR can receive a 24-week course of therapy without compromising the SVR rates; however, those who have not achieved an RVR but who have achieved a complete early virologic response should receive a 48-week course of therapy.

“…Interestingly, it has also been well documented that East Asians have higher SVR rates than patients of European ancestry. 22,23 The SVR rates across different population groups displayed a striking concordance with C allele frequency which emphasizes the greater importance of individual genotype than ethnicity in predicting treatment response. 24 A previous study from Germany, extended to HCV genotype 2 and 3 infected patients, also analyzed 200 healthy controls for comparison and reported the frequency of CC, CT, and TT genotypes with 49%, 42.5%, and 8.5%, respectively.…”

“…En el análisis global de nuestro estudio, la RVS obtenida es más baja que la descrita en la literatura 4,5,15 , lo que hace pensar en factores predictivos adicionales a los descritos para obtener una respuesta terapéutica. Recientemente se han identifi cado factores genéticos fuertemente asociados a la RVS.…”
