Water treatment is one of the most important issues for all walks of life around the world. Different from the conventional water treatment technology, the advanced power electronic pulse technology has unique features and advantages for the modern water treatment. Unfortunately, there is no literature reported to describe them in a comprehensive and systematic way. To fill this gap, an overview of modern power electronic pulse generators (PPGs) for water treatment is presented. This paper, for the first time, classifies the different types of PPGs from the viewpoint of pulse formation. Each of them is discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages are compared and summarized. Aside from that, this paper presents the development and trend of the pulse generators suitable for the specified water treatment processes such as electrolysis, sterilization, and discharge degradation. Finally, a list of more than 100 relevant technical papers is also appended for a quick reference.

Realized a high-voltage pulse generator (HVPG) in a pulsed electric field (PEF). The honey pasteurization process with a PEF uses short electrical pulses to honey nectar through electrodes directed at a stirring rod, which deactivates spores and fungi. The PEF is a non-thermal technology for honey preservation. PEF is applied for vessels with a capacity of 80 liters to support micro, small, and medium enterprises; they have yet to make it so far. This study aimed to produce an HVPG design in randu honey preservation by controlling treatment time and specific input energy requirements. The modulation uses pulse width modulation (PWM) on a 50% duty cycle microcontroller. The first pasteurization was through a heating process for 60 minutes, followed by testing the effectiveness of PEF by adjusting the suitability of the processing time for 60 minutes. Measurement of the treatment time after the pasteurization process shows that the average voltage and current used are 25kV~40kV and 0.3A. The electric field strength sent to the stir bar is 0.33kV/cm. During the pasteurization process of randu honey, the temperature setting is gradually increased to 70°C, with the heating process for 60 minutes, and the process stops. The honey process continues to apply PEF for the temperature decreases to 24°C in the honey liquid. This aims to deactivate the spores and herbs without causing loss of the sensory and physical properties of the honey liquid.

A unique all solid-state pulsed power system has been tested at the Naval Research Laboratory that produced 200 kV, 4.5 kA, and 300 ns pulses, continuously for more than 11,500,000 shots into a resistive load at a repetition rate of 10 pps. The Marx has an efficiency of 80% based on calorimetric measurements. This pulser is used to evaluate components and advance solid state designs for a next generation solid-state pulsed power system to drive an electron beam pumped KrF laser system for inertial fusion energy. The solid state pulser, designed and constructed by PLEX LLC, consists of a 12 stage Marx, coupled with a 3rd harmonic stage to sharpen the Marx output waveforms, a main magnetic switch, a compact pulse forming line used as a transit time isolator, and a resistive load. Each Marx stage uses an APP Model S33A compact high voltage switch that consists of 12 series connected thyristors. A life test on individual thyristors showed operation of > 300 M shots at 20 Hz without failure.
