Peers as primary attachment sources in yearling rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

Abstract: Peer bonds were examined in 2 experiments using juvenile rhesus monkeys to determine (a) whether specific attachment bonds are formed between age-mates, (b) whether preferred age-mates can provide a secure base, and (c) whether a previous attachment bond affects the quality of subsequent attachment bonds. In Experiment 1,8 peer-only reared (PO) monkeys demonstrated a specific preference for a predicted favorite peer when given a choice between a familiar and 2 unfamiliar peers. In Experiment 2, PO Ss were plac… Show more

“…Aggression was quantified by a panel of responses that included shaking the cage, hitting the Plexiglas panel, and ear wiggling (12,14,17). In addition, we assessed exploration and sexual activity (i.e., masturbation), behaviors that ordinarily occur only in safe, nonstressful environments (18). Each score consisted of the total number of occurrences over the 30-min pairing time of all behaviors.…”

“…Durations and frequencies of behaviors were obtained using an objectively defined 14-category behavioral scoring system (Higley et al 1992a), specifically designed to assess disturbed behaviors and social functioning in the rhesus monkey. The three observers used in the study to score behaviors were trained by a laboratory technician, who has used the same behavior scoring system for over a decade, to a criterion of r Ͼ 0.90 reliability with the technician for all behaviors in the behavioral scoring system.…”

“…While both PR and SPR monkeys display regressive, infantile behaviors (Higley et al, 1992), previous casual observations suggest that SPR monkeys exhibit a particularly high incidence of rocking and other abnormal stypic and stereotypic behaviors that may interfere with competent social functioning as these animals mature. We therefore predicted that both early in life and through adulthood, MR monkeys would outrank their PR and SPR counterparts and PR subjects would rank higher than their SPR cage-mates.…”
