Objectives: A biopsychosocial approach to understand and treat pain is crucial; however, there are limited socially-targeted interventions for adolescents with chronic pain. Peer support interventions implemented with other populations are associated with positive outcomes. Adolescents with chronic pain perceive peer support to have high potential value. This study explored the preferences of adolescents with chronic pain regarding the content and design of a group peer support intervention. Methods: Fourteen adolescents with chronic pain (Mage: 15.21 y; 9 females; 3 males, 1 non-binary, 1 gender questioning) completed a virtual interview and survey. Interviews were analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis and surveys were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Adolescents described how they want to both talk and do activities together within a fun and casual environment with a facilitator present - ideally someone with lived experience of chronic pain. Preferences were for a medium sized group intervention that was in-person, at a consistent time on a weekday after school, and semi-structured. Barriers to attending and engaging in the potential group peer intervention were also discussed. Discussion: Adolescents with chronic pain desire a facilitated socially-focused intervention that provides them with the opportunity to spend time with other adolescents with chronic pain. A group peer support environment where adolescents with chronic pain can provide and receive peer support through sharing their experiences with others who understand them as well as engage in activities was described. The findings from this study provide insights for the development of a group peer support intervention.

IntroductionFear of stigmatization, high perceived partner burden, or refraining from self-disclosure may manifest in romantic rejection concerns among adolescents with celiac disease (CD), potentially impacting their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This study examined the prevalence, predictors, and consequences of romantic rejection concerns among adolescents and young adults with CD.MethodsA cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 165 German adolescents and young adults (aged 14–22) with self-reported CD. Participants completed measures of romantic rejection concerns, illness identity, self-esteem, peer support, and CD-specific HRQOL.ResultsParticipants reported moderate levels of concerns about the impact of CD on their romantic relationships, with no significant gender differences. Participants involved in romantic relationships expressed lower concerns of rejection, but similar preference for a “gluten-free partner.” Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that higher illness acceptance and peer support predicted lower rejection concerns. Significant interactions emerged between self-esteem and illness acceptance, and between self-esteem and peer support. Higher illness acceptance predicted fewer rejection worries only among those with high self-esteem, while peer support played a mitigating role only for those with low self-esteem. Romantic rejection concerns significantly predicted lower CD-specific HRQOL across all domains.DiscussionAnxieties about CD's impact on romantic relationships are prevalent among adolescents and may hinder their HRQOL. The findings highlight the complex interplay between self-esteem, illness identity, and social support in shaping romantic concerns. Targeted interventions focusing on peer support and fostering positive illness identity are recommended to alleviate rejection fears and improve HRQOL among youth with CD.

Do adolescents and young people with celiac disease worry about the impact of their illness to their ability to find romantic partners? Fear of stigmatization, high perceived partner burden, or refraining from self-disclosure and compassion may manifest in romantic rejection concerns among adolescents and young adults with CD, contributing to lower health-related quality of life. In a sample of 165 German adolescents and young adults with CD, we found moderate levels of romantic rejection concerns, with no significant gender differences. In regression analysis, significant interactions revealed that higher positive acceptance of one’s illness in one’s illness identity predicted lower rejection concerns among those with high self-esteem, and higher peer support mitigates rejection fears among those with low self-esteem. Finally, romantic rejection concerns significantly predicted health-related quality of life over and above other known predictors. The study underscores the crucial role of acceptance and support for managing romantic anxieties, and the role of self-esteem in moderating these effects. Our findings suggest specific pathways to reduce anxieties related to romantic rejection through counseling and interventions, and emphasize the need to address psychosocial health concerns and anxieties within the context of a holistic treatment approach.
