Wright's competency assessment model is well known, yet implementation has been largely challenging. Some organizations have attempted enterprise-wide implementation. This article summarizes how Wright's model was used from a specific topic perspective. Centralized nursing professional development practitioners created flexible competency validation guidelines and supplemental tools (literature review, exemplar, and peer review) for use by sedation nurses regardless of experience or practice setting. Post-implementation data show 62% adoption of new validation methods after 1 year.

Wright’s competency model is increasingly used by healthcare organizations around the globe. This article describes the implementation of Wright’s model over a 4-year period. Creation of a steering group and decentralization of the effort were keys to success in achieving over 98% participation across all nursing areas and six other healthcare professions. Clinical and leadership staff were surveyed pre- and postimplementation on 11 measures. All levels of staff reported positive improvement in each measure.

Background and PurposeThe objectives of this study were to develop a National Nursing Core Competency Standards (NNCCS)-based instrument and determine its construct validity and internal consistency reliability.MethodsA methodologic research design was used to validate the 59-item scale based on the responses of 600 nurses. The scale items were culled from the client care, leadership and management, and research competencies identified in the NNCCS.ResultsThe results of the analyses confirmed 53 items and gave rise to a five-factor solution. The five dimensions are leadership, management, research, ethico-legal, and strategic competencies.ConclusionsThe seminal psychometric testing provided an evidence of acceptable validity and reliability of the proposed instrument. Further testing was recommended to accrue the psychometric soundness of the instrument.
