Factors Influencing Academic Self-Efficacy Among Nursing Students During COVID-19: A Path Analysis

Introduction: The shift to online learning owing to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic is posing an additional challenge to academic success, particularly for students who speak English as a Second Language (ESL). This study aimed to examine the factors that contribute to academic self-efficacy among ESL nursing students. Method: This was a cross-sectional study using path analysis with 113 undergraduate ESL nursing students in New York City. Data were collected online using self-report measures of the study variables: academic self-efficacy, perfectionistic concerns, acculturative stress, and e-learning stress. A hypothetical path model was tested using AMOS 26.0. Results: Perfectionistic concerns and acculturative stress directly affected academic self-efficacy. Furthermore, perfectionistic concerns and e-learning stress indirectly affected academic self-efficacy via the acculturative stress path. Discussion: Results indicate the importance of developing a multifaceted intervention that considers diverse cultural and psychological factors to help ESL nursing students enhance their academic self-efficacy in e-learning environments.

A pesar del elevado número de publicaciones sobre mentoría existen dificultades a la hora de determinar los factores que contribuyen al éxito de la mentoría.En el presente artículo se realiza una revisión sistemática sobre las variables que se han utilizado como predictoras o antecedentes, las variables de proceso y las de resultados en los estudios de mentoría entre pares en entornos universitarios. La mayor parte de las veces los programas van dirigidos a estudiantes de nuevo ingreso (telémacos) a quienes acompañan y facilitan su integración otros estudiantes de cursos superiores (mentores). La revisión permite proponer un modelo sistémico y multinivel que pone en relación los tres tipos de variables y que pretende ser útil para determinar las características que han de tener los programas de mentoría entre iguales en entornos universitarios desde un punto de vista social, organizacional, grupal e individual; las actividades a realizar en las reuniones de mentoría; y las distintas variables en las que puede tener impacto la mentoría como índices de abandono, integración del estudiantado, satisfacción con la carrera, salud, etc.

Peer mentoring is a widely employed strategy in higher education to foster student development and integration. However, the effectiveness of peer mentoring in higher education lacks well‐established statements. A systematic review was conducted to assess the efficacy of peer mentoring during the initial phase of academic studies. This review evaluated effectiveness based on four outcomes: intention to drop out, the sense of belonging, academic and social integration. It also scrutinised gender disparities and distinctions between digital and non‐digital, and group‐based and individual peer mentoring. The review revealed that peer mentoring is an effective support mechanism, yielding favourable impacts across various outcomes: social and academic integration, career benefits, emotional benefits, soft skills, university‐life balance, study dropout intention and sense of belonging to university. Gender disparities were generally inconspicuous in most studies. Digital peer mentoring proved effective, though students reported reduced levels of social support compared to non‐digital peer‐mentoring. Both individual and group‐based peer mentoring programmes were utilised, but specific outcomes distinguishing the two formats were not discerned. In summary, peer mentoring proves to be a valuable resource for first‐year students, particularly concerning academic and social integration. To holistically address the diverse needs of first‐year students additional approaches may be considered.
