Peels of Psidium Guajava Fruit Possess Antimicrobial Properties

Abstract: Objective: Psidium guajava (guava) leaf extracts have been extensively studied for their antimicrobial effect. Yet, very few studies investigated the antimicrobial effect of the ripe guava fruit. This study aims at examining aqueous extracts of ripe Psidium guajava fruit, bulb, seeds and peels (harvested in autumn at Jordan River valley). Materials and methods:Decreasing concentrations of water extracts of three parts of the fruit were tested against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria as well as the yeas… Show more

“…Polyphenols from apple peels, for example, could inhibit the growth of a pathogenic bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes [40]. Similarly, water extracts of guava peels were also reported to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA strains [41]. Watermelon peels have been shown to inhibit a number of microorganisms including Pseudomonas fluorescens [42].…”

“…P. guajava L. is a widely cultivated fruit plant, distributed worldwide in tropical and subtropical areas. Guava fruit is rich in vitamins A and C, iron, phosphorus, calcium, and minerals and contains various organic compounds such as (i) polyphenols with potential antimicrobial activities [ 31 ], notably the gallic and ferulic acids active against a methicillin-resistant S. aureus clinical strain [ 32 ] and (ii) sesquiterpenes with depressant activities on the central nervous system [ 33 ].…”
