PEEK Dental Implants: A Review of the Literature

Abstract: The insertion of dental implants containing titanium can be associated with various complications (eg, hypersensitivity to titanium). The aim of this article is to evaluate whether there are existing studies reporting on PEEK (polyetheretherketone) as an alternative material for dental implants. A systematic literature search of PubMed until December 2010 yielded 3 articles reporting on dental implants made from PEEK. One article analyzed stress distribution in carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK (CFR-PEEK) dental im… Show more

“…A variety of studies of bond strength between veneering resin composite and PEEK-framework have been performed already, in which different pre-treatments of the airborne-particle abraded surface with piranha-etching [13,14,15,16], sulfuric acid [5,9,12,17] and cold plasma treatment [18,19] were tested, providing, however, some conflicting results. Some of these studies examined the influence of the adhesive on the bond strength to PEEK and the vast majority showed nevertheless adequate bonding results with MMA-based adhesive materials comparable to those of conventional framework materials like ceramic or metal alloys [14,15,16,20,21,22].…”

“…4 In dentistry, PEEK is used for interim abutments, implant-supported bars, clamp material, and dental implants. 5 PEEK-blanks have a greyish/brown or pearl white, opaque color and are unsuitable for monolithic esthetic dental restorations, especially for the anterior region. Thus, veneering is required, but bonding to veneering composite resin materials remains a challenge because of the complex chemical structure of PEEK.…”
