PEDOT:PSS-Based Piezo-Resistive Sensors Applied to Reinforcement Glass Fibres for in Situ Measurement during the Composite Material Weaving Process

Abstract: The quality of fibrous reinforcements used in composite materials can be monitored during the weaving process. Fibrous sensors previously developed in our laboratory, based on PEDOT:PSS, have been adapted so as to directly measure the mechanical stress on fabrics under static or dynamic conditions. The objective of our research has been to develop new sensor yarns, with the ability to locally detect mechanical stresses all along the warp or weft yarn. This local detection is undertaken inside the weaving loom … Show more

“…Figure shows the as fabricated PEDOT:PSS films on PDMS substrates having random micro ridges. Due to the presence of complex roughness patterns the film thickness was measured using gravimetric analysis . The mass of the PDMS substrates were measured with and without the films on a precision mass balance having a least count of 0.01 mg and the thickness was estimated from the definition of the density of the PEDOT:PSS film.…”

“…Another class of sensors, known as textile sensors or flexible sensors, is the new focus of study for many researchers. These are conductive strain sensor wires/ threads in which electrical resistance varies reversibly to applied stress [26][27][28][29]. They can be developed at nanoscale or microscale and can overcome the limitation of brittle behavior of conventional piezo-resistive strain gauges.…”
