Pediococcus pentosaceus IM96 Exerts Protective Effects against Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 Infection In Vivo

Abstract: Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) is a notorious and prevalent foodborne pathogen which can cause serious intestinal diseases. The antagonistic activity of probiotics against EHEC is promising, but most of the studies concerning this subject have been carried out in vitro. Specifically, the interaction between Pediococcus pentosaceus and EHEC O157:H7 in vivo has not been reported yet. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of P. pentosaceus IM96 on EHEC O157:H7-infected female mice in viv… Show more

“…It has been reported that Pediococcus pentosaceus CECT 8330 protects DSS‐induced colitis and increased the fecal SCFAs level in mice (Dong et al., 2022). P. pentosaceus IM96 alleviated intestinal mucosal damage and increased the level of SCFAs in mice infected by EHEC O157:H7 (Li et al., 2021). Pediococcus acidilactici FZU106 intervention significantly increased the SCFAs levels in high‐fat diet‐fed rats, alleviating lipid metabolism disorder (Zhang et al., 2022).…”

“…The agar diffusion assay was used to identify the bacteriostatic ability of cell-free supernatant (CFS) by Zhang and Li et al [ 27 , 28 ]. A 15 mL aliquot of 0.4% soft agar with 2% bacterial culture medium was poured into a sterile Petri dish, and sterile Oxford cups (ϕ = 7.64 mm) were put on the surface of the medium.…”

“…Blood was collected by heart puncture after fasting for about 16 h in order to conduct the serum biochemical analysis. The concentrations of biological indexes related to hypertension were determined by the commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits from Beijing Dongge Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Beijing, China) following the manufacturer’s protocols [ 23 ].…”
