Pediatric Stroke: Overview and Recent Updates

Abstract: Stroke can occur at any age or stage in life. Although it is commonly thought of as a disease amongst the elderly, it is important to highlight the fact that it also affects infants and children. In both populations, strokes have a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Arguably, it is more detrimental in the pediatric population given the occurrence at a younger age and therefore, a longer duration of disability, potentially over the entire lifespan. The high rate of morbidity and mortality in pediatrics is at… Show more

“…Accordingly, chronic seizure models are more appropriate for identifying promising anticonvulsive compounds [ 138 ]. Furthermore, seizure may manifest as a secondary symptom of cerebrovascular diseases, such as cerebral venous thrombosis [ 139 ] and neonatal stroke [ 140 ], or some neurodevelopmental diseases, such as CDKL5 deficiency disorder [ 141 ]. In these diseases, seizure may cause severe consequences and even threaten life, despite the existence of other symptoms.…”

“…This autosomal dominant disorder is caused by mutations in the COL3A1 gene (type III collagen). It is mainly associated with vascular complications, including aneurysms, carotid-cavernous fistulae, and cervical artery dissection [49]. Type III collagen is abundant in arterial walls, as well as the walls of the digestive tract, so mutations in COL3A1 cause fragility in these tissues and their predisposition to spontaneous rupture [50].…”

“…Strokespecific mortality is estimated to be around 5% while families of stroked children suffer from grave psychological and economic issues. 6 Early diagnosis and management are very crucial as the prognosis is directly dependent on it. Keeping in mind, a slogan "TIME IS BRAIN" is floated regarding time management in this medical emergency of stroke.…”
