Pediatric Robotic Surgery in South America: Advantages and Difficulties in Program Implementation

Abstract: Robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery is gaining popularity around the world due to its vast benefits. Although it has been established mainly in developed countries, in South America the robotic programs have become more popular, but its growth is clearly slower. Information about robotic pediatric surgery program in Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina was collected through e-mail surveys. Results were analyzed and compared to worldwide information about robotic surgery. Due to the wide social, economical, … Show more

“…Meanwhile, some influential factors may prevent the development of orthopedic robotics. For the hospitals of underdeveloped and developing countries, the financial burden of purchase and maintenance costs most likely limits its development [ 13 15 ]. Furthermore, it poses a challenge for orthopedic surgeons to change the conventional concept and skills in robotic techniques [ 15 , 16 ].…”

“…There is a scarcity of publications from Latin American countries to date that describe pediatric patients who have undergone robotic surgery [13,56,57], and in relation to the number of RALRNF publications in the world, it is also limited, including the adult and pediatric population [20,[58][59][60][61][62]. Objective of this study is to present our experience in RALRNF and highlight its advantages in children.…”
