Pediatric ovarian neoplastic tumors: incidence, age at presentation, tumor markers and outcome

Abstract: Both benign and malignant ovarian tumors are rare in the pediatric population, but the incidence increases with age. High alpha-fetoprotein and CA 125 levels were associated with malignant tumors. The prognosis of the pediatric ovarian tumors seems to be favorable.

“…These tumors were found in 3 women, 2 of them were pregnant. Similar morphological features have been described by Massicot et al [18], investigating SMT in 23 girls with mean age of 11.5 years. The investigators found papillary structures inside cystadenomas in only 4 girls in puberty, suggesting the need for hormonal stimulation.…”

“…In a retrospective review by Taskinen et al, 45 patients who underwent surgery for an ovarian neoplasm at a single institution were evaluated. This report provided a descriptive look at tumor marker testing and results by pathology [1]. Unfortunately, the small cohort made it difficult to identify any significant correlation, but the authors reported that AFP and CA 125 were most often associated with malignant pathology.…”

“…However, there are little data on the population-based incidence of ovarian neoplasms in children. 4,6 Previous studies have suggested that about half of the ovarian masses in children are neoplastic. 7,8 In a previous study we found that overall incidence of ovarian neoplasms in 0-15-year-old girls was 2.2/100 000 and the median age at presentation was 13 years.…”
