Pediatric metanephric adenoma: case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Metanephric adenomas are rare benign renal neoplasms, uncommonly seen in the pediatric population. They are typically detected incidentally on imaging studies performed for unrelated clinical presentations. Preoperatively, the imaging appearance of this tumor overlaps with the appearance of more common and more aggressive renal neoplasms such as Wilms' tumor or renal cell carcinoma. We present a case of a pathologically proven metanephric adenoma, monitored preoperatively for approximately 5 years, prior to de… Show more

“…2 Despite the fact that some efforts to predict a preoperative diagnosis of MA by cytologic and radiologic findings are appreciable, clinical and radiologic features of MA are indistinct, and histologic examination is required to establish definitive diagnosis. [2][3][4][5] With recent developments in medicine and surgery and prominent success in survival rates, management of renal tumors in children does not only consist of debulking surgery by the fear of malignancy anymore. There is growing evidence that loss of the nephrons may be related to reduced glomerular filtration rate and even chronic kidney disease.…”

“…5 To date, approximately 100 cases of MA have been reported in the English literature. 6 In rare conditions, composite MA is a coexistence of different renal tumour components such as papillary RCC, Wilms tumour and RCC. 7,8 In immunohistochemical staining, MA is positive for CD57, Vimentin, WT1 and CK7, and is negative for EMA and S-100.…”
