Pediatric hepatic hemangiosarcoma in a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta)

Abstract: Background-Pediatric hepatic angiosarcoma is a rare condition in children with poor prognosis. Microscopically this neoplasm has a particular 'Kaposi-form' arrangement. Hemangiosarcoma in non-human primates is a rare finding.

“…A single case of pericardial mesothelioma has been reported in a rhesus macaque (Chandra and Mansfield, 1999). Neoplasms of the vascular system is slightly more common and reports include a cavernous lymphangioma in a squirrel monkey , a renal hemangiosarcoma in a moustached tamarin (Saguinus mystax) (Gozalo et al, 1993), a hepatic hemangiosarcoma in a rhesus macaque (Mejia et al, 2009), a subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma in a rhesus macaque (Myers et al, 2001), and a cavernous hemangioma affecting the ovary in a rhesus macaque (Martin et al, 1970). A single case of hepatic hemangioendothelioma has been reported in a rhesus macaque that was part of a long-term radiation study (Woodruff and Johnson, 1968).…”

“…Clostridial disease has been reported in a sooty mangabey ( Cercocebus atys), eight rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and two cotton‐top tamarins ( Saguinus oedipus) , and although hepatitis does not appear typical, this pathology was seen in one of the affected rhesus macaques . In lemurs, hepatocellular and cholangiocellular carcinomas are relatively common and hepatic haemangiosarcoma and haemangioendothelioma have been previously reported as single cases in rhesus macaques …”

“…[17][18][19] In lemurs, hepatocellular and cholangiocellular carcinomas are relatively common 20 and hepatic haemangiosarcoma and haemangioendothelioma have been previously reported as single cases in rhesus macaques. 21,22 A surgical approach with the removal of the affected lobe gives the highest chance of survival in dogs and rabbits, 1,4 and it is anticipated that lobectomy of the affected lobe would be the only effective treatment option in NHPs. Although apparently an uncommon condition, liver lobe torsion should be considered as a differential diagnosis in NHPs presenting for acute weakness, particularly with a recent history of parturition or abortion.…”

“…Haemangiosarcomas are malignant neoplasms of endothelial origin that are scarcely reported in the urinary bladders of dogs and cats . This type of tumour has been rarely reported in NHPs , including subcutaneous and paediatric hepatic haemangiosarcomas, both in rhesus macaques, Macaca mulatta . Additionally, renal and intrauterine haemangiosarcomas have been diagnosed in a moustached tamarin, Saguinus mystax and a black spider monkey, Ateles paniscus , respectively.…”
