Objective: Since skin diseases may show atypical presentation in children, histopathological evaluation plays a more critical role. The aim of this study is to determine the diagnoses that are finalized after the histopathological evaluation, which departments are frequently consulted, and the methods of follow-up in pediatric dermatology. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on pediatric and adolescent patients whose biopsy was taken after evaluation in the pediatric dermatology outpatient clinic for 42 months. Results: Of the pediatric patients whose histopathological evaluation was made, 16.7% were consulted to other departments and 70.8% were followed up in the pediatric dermatology clinic with different methods. According to the histopathological evaluation results, 91.9% of the lesions were benign, 5.6% were premalignant, and only 1.5% were malignant. Three patients (1.5%) with malignant lesions in our pediatric dermatology clinic were followed up with pediatric dermatology and pediatric hematology. In comparison, premalignant lesions of 3 patients were excised in pediatric dermatology surgery; 6 patients were excised in plastic surgery, 1 patient in pediatric surgery, and 1 patient in ophthalmology. Conclusion: Pediatric dermatology is a department that should have pediatric dermatopathology and pediatric dermatosurgery units in itself. It is crucial to be in the teamwork for consultations and follow-ups after histopathological examinations.

Objective: Pediatric skin diseases may show various manifestations, occasionally affecting the patients' quality of life. Histopathological examination may be required for the diagnosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the spectrum of clinicopathological features in pediatric skin lesions. Material and Method:A total of 368 biopsies of 359 consecutive patients were included. The clinicopathological findings were retrospectively evaluated. Non-neoplastic (inflammatory) lesions (ILs) (n=186) were grouped per their origin, while neoplastic/proliferative lesions (NPLs) (n=182) were grouped based on their pattern. The clinical and histopathological characteristics were statistically analyzed.Results: 51% were male and the median age was 10.4±4.9 years (range 0-17). ILs mainly involved the head and neck, and NPLs were mostly located in the lower extremity (p<0.001). The most common NPLs were benign nevus (18%, n=33) and pilomatrixoma (15%, n=27), while the most frequent IL was spongiotic/psoriasiform dermatitis (38%). Skin appendage/connective tissue tumors were the largest among NPLs (p=0.02). NPLs were more frequently seen in children >12 years old compared to ILs (p=0.03). The discordance rate between clinical and histopathological diagnoses was higher for NPLs (27% vs. 15%). Conclusion:Although the spectrum of skin lesions is broad in pediatric patients, most are benign in nature. The higher frequency of melanocytic and/or cystic lesions among children >12 years old may be attributed to increased self-care during puberty. Neoplastic/proliferative lesions of childhood seem to be less commonly recognized by clinicians, and a multidisciplinary approach remains the optimal method, considering the relatively high rate of discordance between the clinical and histopathological diagnoses.

Background: Hesitancy to perform skin biopsies in children or adolescents may lead to delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis and relatively, few studies analyzing pediatric skin biopsies exist. Aim and Objectives: This study aims to analyze the spectrum of skin diseases biopsied and demographic data of pediatric patients underwent skin biopsies at a tertiary health care center in India. Materials and Methods: Biopsy records over six years were analyzed, noting demographic data, disease duration, clinical differential diagnoses (CDD), final diagnosis after histopathology, disease categorization, and agreement between clinical and final diagnosis. The mean, range, and statistical significance of differences between proportions were calculated. Results: A total of 1308 biopsy records were analyzed. A male preponderance was noted (males - 55.1%; n = 721, females - 44.9%; n = 587). Most biopsies were performed in adolescents (12–18 years; 55.2%) followed by school-age children (5–12 years; 31.4%). Preponderant disease groups biopsied comprised papulosquamous (17.7%; n = 231) and infectious diseases (14.1%; n = 184). Leprosy was the most common infectious disease (37.5%; n = 69) with most patients belonging to borderline tuberculoid spectrum. The overall diagnostic agreement was 74.7%. No correlation of final diagnosis was noted with the number of CDD offered. In more than a fifth of cases, biopsy averted misdiagnosis. Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of skin biopsies in pediatric patients and the relatively high clinico-histopathologic agreement. Leprosy and papulosquamous diseases were preponderant in the pediatric dermatopathology caseload.
