Pediatric biopsy of a single native kidney

Abstract: Technological improvements have reduced the frequency of complications in children receiving a percutaneous renal biopsy. No study has systematically compared the safety of open and percutaneous kidney biopsy. Yet many nephrologists consider a single native kidney an absolute contraindication to percutaneous biopsy. We have established an international registry of single native kidney biopsies in children and we now report our early results. Eight biopsies are included. Seven patients had percutaneous biopsies… Show more

“…This is slightly higher than previously published complication rates for renal biopsies in patients with normal renal function, with the prevalence of minor and major complications occurring 10 and 0.5% respectively [9,10,11]. However, no studies have looked at bleeding rates post-biopsy in patients with renal failure, and the routine use of ultrasound immediately on completion of a biopsy is very sensitive to the presence of any small hematoma at the biopsy site which is recorded in the interventional report.…”

“…There was 1 child with FSGS due to hyperfiltration injury and 1 child with idiopathic membranous glomerulonephritis. There are several case reports on FSGS in patients with solitary kidneys [37][38][39][40] . These reports suggest that the appearance of proteinuria and focal glomerulosclerosis in patients with a solitary kidney could be due to chronic glomerular hyperfiltration, mainly if intrinsic abnormalities (reflux nephropathy or urinary obstruction) are present in the solitary kidney.…”

“…Undoubtedly, percutaneous renal biopsy substantially aids clinical nephrology by providing precise diagnoses, prognostic insights, and facilitating tailored treatment for patients with kidney issues (Greenbaum et al, 2000). Nonetheless, the procedure's associated risks of morbidity and occasional mortality necessitate tailored risk-benefit https://digital-science.pubmedia.id/index.php/phms evaluations for each patient, a process prone to subjectivity (Iversen & Brun, 1951;Kuller et al, 2001).…”
