Pediatric Behçet's Disease

Abstract: Behçet's Disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis firstly described as a disorder causing aphthous lesion in oral and genital mucosae and uveitis. The disease has an extremely unique distribution characterized by the highest incidence in communities living along the historical Silk road. Although our understanding of the etiopathogenesis of BD has expanded over time, there are still lots of unidentified points in the underlying mechanisms of the disease. The accepted opinion in the light of the current knowledge … Show more

“…NBD in children is different from that observed in adults. It is reported in 3.6–59.6% of pediatric BD cases, and the incidence of NBD-related cerebrovascular diseases is higher in children than in adults ( 11 , 12 ). Metreau-Vaste et al ( 6 ) have found that the most common neurological lesion is CVST, whereas meningoencephalitis and peripheral neuritis are rare.…”

“…The prevalence of BD is exclusively high in countries across the Old “Silk Road”, the area between the Mediterranean and East Asia. The highest prevalence is reported in Turkey, Iran, Israel, Northern Jordan, Korea, Northern China and Japan ( 93 , 94 ). The most frequent types of ocular involvement in both adults and children are bilateral anterior uveitis with hypopyon, panuveitis, retinitis with retinal infiltrates and occlusive retinal vasculitis with high risk of severe course of ocular inflammation in children ( 95 ).…”

“…The most frequent types of ocular involvement in both adults and children are bilateral anterior uveitis with hypopyon, panuveitis, retinitis with retinal infiltrates and occlusive retinal vasculitis with high risk of severe course of ocular inflammation in children ( 95 ). The eye is the most frequently involved organ, in up to 60–80% of cases with manifestation within 2–3 years after the onset of BD ( 94 , 96 ), and in several cases the ocular disease occurs first. This, pediatricians must be aware of the possibility of disease in children with uveitis but must also be aware of the possibility of eye disease in children with BD.…”

“…BD, a chronic multi-system autoimmune disease, is characterized by a chronic, relapsing remitting course of clinical manifestations, such as skin rash, oral/genital ulcers ( Akiyama et al, 2020 ; Gholijani et al, 2020 ). In 2021, Yildiz et al (2021) finds that the total prevalence of BD worldwide is 10.3 per 100,000. Moreover, Northern Jordan has the highest prevalence rate (664 per 100,000 population), followed by Turkey (600 per 100,000 population), and Scotland has the lowest prevalence rate (0.3 per 100,000 population).…”
