Pedagogy + Reflection: A Problem-Based Learning Case in Interior Design

Abstract: Interior design education aims to provide students with real learning experiences. The authors, hence, combined problem-based learning (PBL) and design thinking to design a seven-week studio project in the Interior design program at a land-grant Midwest university. Thirty-two sophomores were engaged in different stages of the design process for the education wing of Minnesota’s official natural history museum in collaboration with Perkins+ Will, a global architecture and design firm. Students explored design t… Show more

“…These results suggest that given additional time for reflection, the pandemic may emerge as a stronger influence on wellness teaching behaviors if explored further. Hughes et al (2020) referenced behavioral theories (e.g., Hansman, 2001) to emphasize the importance of social interaction in processing learning, and strategies such as backward design, which have been used in ID along with problem-based learning (Asojo & Vo, 2021). It is possible that with dialog and reflection, new pedagogical strategies can be nurtured and developed for implementation in the future.…”

“…At the same time, teacher training and team building are strengthened, encouraging teachers to participate in practical projects and industry research. This is also conducive to improving teaching level and professional quality, enhancing teachers' industry experience and teaching practice ability [8]. ISSN 2663-8169 Vol.…”

“…Curriculum implementation with the PBL approach model helps prepare students to develop skills and empathy by listening to clients critically, evaluating their work and that of others, developing independent learning, and working in teams (Galford et al, 2015). Problem-solving-based learning will help students learn how to communicate, collaborate, and compromise to achieve common goals and find the most relevant solutions to their problems (Asojo & Vo, 2021). Project-based learning will help generate innovations.…”
