ABSTRACT. In the presented paper assumption is being raised that ceteris paribus forecasted energy efficiency until the year 2050 reveals competitive potential, which could be reached if technological progress is ongoing and no radical changes in the energy consumption culture are observed. The research methodology is as follows. In order to clarify what trends of energy efficiency change are preconditioned by the structure of the economy, technological potential and behavioral patterns, activity level and energy intensity in the household sector are forecasted for the selected European countries -Poland, Lithuania and Germany. Lithuania and Poland represent here the countries slightly less economically developed as compared to highly developed Germany. Long-range energy forecasting software LEAP, developed by Stockholm Environment Institute is being employed for the long-term forecasting of energy use and energy intensities in the household sectors. The obtained results, as we have expected, allow verifying if consistent patterns of energy intensity change is existent for currently comparatively less developed and better countries, and if such patterns differ. Peculiarities of energy intensity change in less developed and more developed European countries are to be economically interpreted. The obtained results will allow to judge about change of competitiveness of the considered countries. Provided insights can be instrumental for devising national economic policies oriented on more efficient energy use in the long run.JEL Classification: N70, O18

“…After more than ten years under leftist governments, Brazil has to face two main paradoxes: the first is related to public expenditure, since the Brazilian government is not yet able to offer high quality services; the second is the fact that Brazil didn't take proper advantage at the opportune moment to implement structural reforms, and instead concentrated its efforts on commodities trading (Contipelli, 2016). However, historical and current evidence suggest that income inequality concomitant with a rise in economic growth can be limited and reduced by political reforms (Cavalcanti, 2014;Tvaronavičienė, Gatautis, 2017). In this process, social participation and democracy are very important; political freedom is highly valued as pivotal in the achievement of human development (Sen, 1999 In this view, both high public services and low inequality (that is, fair income distribution) are influent on the development of a country.…”

Abstract. Universal access to the commons, such as to clean water, might be seen as a strong challenge to development as freedom. Beyond water scarcity, several regions are already suffering from lack of access, even where water is abundant. Meanwhile, climate change, overpopulation and agricultural demand are severely affecting the quality and availability of water resources. At the global level, concerns about water are tied to the Amazon Region, which contains the greatest potential water stock in the world, and which simultaneously faces the worst troubles in access and supply. This paper is therefore aimed at pointing out the role inclusive social innovations can play in mitigating the impact of growing water shortages and securing effective water use. After a first introduction to Brazil, Amazonas and Parà state statistics on water-related aspects, the research focuses on results emerging from the AguaSociAL project.

Insights into global trends of capital flows’ peculiarities: emerging leadership of China

The presented paper aims to reveal the latest trends of the international capital movement. The following countries/regions are being considered: China, Eastern Europe, Latin America, North America and Western Europe during the years of 2013-2017. Classic economic theory suggests that better developed countries are capital donors, and less developed countries, respectively, are capital recipients. Analysis of the foreign direct investments (FDI) intensity, outflows complimented by mergers and acquisitions (purchases) indicator allows to conclude that the recent picture does not comply statements of classic economic theory, since China, being comparatively less developed country demonstrates vivid economic leadership in terms of exporting its capital to other countries. This behavior can condition accelerated development of China via acquisitions of additional market to own production.
