Peculiarities of current sensors used in contemporary electric energy metering devices

Abstract: An electricity meter is a tool that determines the amount of electricity transferred to the network by a producer and consumed by electrically powered loads. Metering devices are composed of sensitive sensors that simultaneously measure currents and voltages and a microprocessor, which calculates required values basing on the received data. This article gives an overview of the most common current sensors, which are used in contemporary electricity metering devices. Their principles, advantages and disadvantag… Show more

“…The leakage current increases with increasing surface contamination. Especially, leakage current is higher on a wet, contaminated layer than on a dry insulator, which over a long time can cause the insulator to deteriorate and eventually fail, leading to a flashover or breakdown [ 2 , 4 , 9 ].…”

“…Consequently, this solution is a kind of voltage ripple, which, taking into account the effects caused by the DERs, can lead to regulatory anomalies. However, complementing decentralized control tools, centralized management and decentralized measuring and signaling equipment make the problem easy to deal with [10,11]. The question arises as to which DERs' density it is worth installing such devices at all, where and with what means it is worth implementing measurements, signals and regulations.…”

“…The accuracy of a power meter is a function of the measurement error, which depends on the current and voltage sensors' accuracy. Nowadays power meters' manufacturers use three main sensor types: resistive, current transformers, and Hall effect based transducers [1]. Current transducers implemented on the basis of these methods have their own errors, which manufacturers try to eliminate by design improving and utilization of alternative materials [2,3].…”
