Radiation generated by a charge moving along one of the prism borders is analyzed. The size of the object is assumed to be much larger than the wavelengths under consideration. We calculate the wave field outside the target using the "aperture method" which is applicable for any distances from the prism. We obtain the particular form of Stratton-Chu formulas for the case of the prism and develop an algorithm for the calculation of the radiation field outside the prism. Typical numerical results are demonstrated and discussed.

Radiation of charged particles moving in the presence of dielectric targets is of significant interest for various applications in the accelerator and beam physics. The size of these targets is typically much larger than the wavelengths under consideration. This fact gives us an obvious small parameter of the problem and allows developing approximate methods for analysis. We develop two methods, which are called the “ray optics method” and the “aperture method”. In the present paper, we apply these methods to analysis of Cherenkov radiation from a charge moving through a vacuum channel in a solid dielectric sphere. We present the main analytical results and describe the physical effects. In particular, it is shown that the radiation field possesses an expressed maximum at a certain distance from the sphere at the Cherenkov angle. Additionally, we perform simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics and show a good agreement between numerical and analytical results.

We investigate the Cherenkov radiation by a charge uniformly moving inside a dielectric cylindrical channel in a homogeneous medium. The expressions for the Fourier components of the electric and magnetic fields are derived by using the electromagnetic field Green tensor. The spectral distribution of the Cherenkov radiation intensity in the exterior medium is studied for the general case of frequency dispersion of the interior and exterior dielectric functions. It is shown that, under certain conditions on the dielectric permittivities, strong narrow peaks appear in the spectral distribution. The spectral locations of those peaks are specified and their heights and widths are estimated analytically on the base of the dispersion equation for the electromagnetic eigenmodes of the cylinder.
